Bringing together leading contemporary artists from around the world and from across Africa, the 2010 Fine Art project is one of the largest and most ambitious international art collaborations in history.......’ Read more aabout the project  and a Ed’s Capetown workshop at  www.2010fineart.com

I had 9 days to capture as much of this historic city as I could. My brief was to paint a picture that captured the essence of the beautiful game and the importance of the 2010 World Cup to South Africa. I found a city hastily preparing for the event and all that it would entail.

I spent time visiting the townships of Langa and Gugulethu, talking to players and fans and sketching matches in local leagues. I worked with artists at a workshop in Guga ‘SThebe arts centre. The warmth and passion of the people I met inspired the painting ‘Gugulethu Strike’. The match could go either way as the goalie attempts to cradle the ball. The ball depicts a map of Africa in shadow. Heads and necks are on the line, drama and tension are heightened.

This is a big moment for South Africa and the wider continent. The crowd erupts, blowing their Vuvuzelas in anticipation. Others turn away in disgust, unable to see a goal conceded. A fan nervously chews matches, one match falls away to the field. Football is everything here. It is a matter of life and death.
