An early morning scene of Covent Garden, depicting the East side of St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden, made from sketches there one winter morning.
This painting was inspired by William Hogarth’s painting Morning, which has the same view of this church and church portico designed by Inigo Jones, from his Times of the Day series 1736. Hogarth’s painting contrasts piety and fashion and reveals the poverty, and vice of the era.
